“Ore no imouto ga konna ni kawaii wake ga nai” Volume 2 (Part 5)

To Part 4

The following day, Kyousuke meets Ayase near her school and she reluctantly agrees to hear him out. Apparently, his father (always by chance, it’s not like he wanted to know more about otaku stuff because his daughter likes it!) knows a little about that case and it turns out that the otaku murderer didn’t commit the crimes under the influence of eroge—it was all an exaggeration by some moralistic journalist who wanted to launch a crusade against otaku. Ayase admits she was wrong, but she doesn’t want to be friends with Kirino anyway, because that hobby is still dirty and perverted. She cries “Give me back my friend, that person is not the real Kirino”

Suddenly, Kirino appears and tells Ayase to stop talking about a “fake Kirino” or a “real Kirino”.  Who’s the real Kirino? The one who is fashionable, athletic and gets top marks? “Yes, that’s my Kirino!” replies Ayase. Kirino, however, continues. “Is it weird having that hobby? The real Kirino couldn’t like that? I’m a fake Kirino? I’m sorry, Ayase. You are wrong. Those dirty manga you hate, me, I love them. I have lots of porn games, which I really love. I love anime with cute girls. I can’t get tired of it. I’m very happy when I look at all the good I have. So please, I can understand your concern, but I won’t give it up. Because I like it”

“More than your friend?”

“No, it’s not like that… I like you as much as I like eroge. I like my friends from school, but also my otaku friends. All of them are very important to me, I can’t  throw them away. So Ayase, I won’t give up on either. I won’t give up my hobbies, and I will make up with you. Do you have a problem with that?”

Ayase is moved by Kirino’s words, especially the fact that she said she likes her, but in the end says she can’t make up with Kirino, because she can’t approve of her hobbies.

Suddenly, Kyousuke takes some books out of his bag. Homer’s Oddyssey and the Nihonshoki, and also some siscon doujinshi. His point is: the two classical works are admired by everyone, but they also feature stories about incest. By denying Kirino’s beloved eroge and doujinshi, she’s also denying some of the most important classics. Unsurprisingly, Ayase is unimpressed. Suddenly, Kyousuke embraces Kirino.

“As you can see, Ayase, we love each other. That’s why we collect stories about forbidden love. Don’t call “dirty” something that is the proof of our love. You say it has naked girls, porn scenes? That’s not the point! Kirino’s hobby is what reestablished our broken bonds! Our relationship was always cold. I could never help my sister. I could only watch my sister cry while saying it had nothing to do with me. That’s why I’m so grateful to our hobby. Thanks to it, we became real siblings for the first time. I didn’t have to use the pretext that it didn’t concern me while watching her cry. This love, who can deny it? This is the proof of our love. Listen to me… I looooove my sister!!!!”

Silence.

“Kirino, let’s make up. Immediatly” said Ayase, “I’m sorry I said it’s dirty or I cared about such small details. I just didn’t know…”

Kyousuke approach her “Well, well, that was troublesome”

“Don’t come any closer, pervert!!! Don’t speak to me! Pervert, pervert, pervert!! As I expected you were the root of all evils. Don’t ever touch my Kirino again. You’ll soil her. You’re revolting. You make me sick!”

“Ayase?”

“Don’t worry Kirino, I’ll protect you. Let’s run!… and you sicko, die!”

Well, said Kyousuke to himself once they left. “Just as planned”

Some days later, Kyousuke gets an SMS from Ayase:

“To lying oniisan

Thanks to you, I made up with Kirino. I won’t approve of her hobby, but I’ll make an exception for a while. But I won’t give up. I’ll save her from you, devil. I won’t lose to you. P.S. If you do something weird to Kirino I’ll fucking kill you”

Later, Kirino is speaking to Ayase on the phone once again. Kirino then speaks to Kyousuke…

“What you said the other day, was it true?”

“Who cares? Forget about it”

“Don’t you understand? After that, I was thinking and… if I’m honest, I… think I love you, brother”

“Eeeh, are you serious?”

Kirino bursts out laughing.

“How stupid! You actually believed that? Haha, how disgusting, you siscon”

  1. i’m grateful for your detailed summary, but it would be nice to hear your comment,i found them interesting;you know it used to be more like summary+review.
But if it take too much time, then summary is fine,i’m no complenind.
So thanks,i’m eagerly awaiting for any uptade about L.n. i could never read otherwise.
So kyosuke kissing kirino, how bold!but i still don’t why she said to him”why are acting like a great brother now”or smthg like that, wasn’t it her fault they were like stranger at the begin?Wasn’t she the one looking down on him?

    • OH, I stopped commenting on it because I thought nobody was interested in that, just in reading the summary.

And Kyousuke didn’t kiss her! He just hugged her!

As for whether Kirino was to blame or not… this is something I’ve been meaning to write about for a long time (I actually wrote a draft last month): Kyousuke being the narrator, the whole novel is filtered through his experience. For example, in volume 6 he still claims Kirino hates him despite all the evidence coming from different people that she’s actually very happy about their relationship. I think that to understand Oreimo we have to understand that Kyousuke is the one telling the story—he’s often biased and doesn’t know all the facts, for instance what Kirino actually thinks about him.

For example, it’s curious but some people who have only read the first volume claim that Oreimo is pretty realistic—i.e. it would be like a realistic story about otaku, not a story featuring otaku themes/characters. I disagree: oreimo is 2D through and through.

Admittedly, volume 1 is very very realistic. Let’s not forget something: Kyousuke back then is not an otaku, so he sees the reality of the novel as having no relationship whatsoever with this subculture.

But by volume 6 he’s actually comparing reality (the reality within the novel that is) with eroge. The akagi siblings are truly siscon/brocon. A real loli imouto (Ria) appears. That is, as Kyousuke becomes an otaku, the way the novel is told also changes, from realism to our beloved 2D idealism.

In the same vein, and I don’t want to jump the gun because vol 6 ended with a very important cliffhanger, Kyousuke may have been wrong all along about his relationship with Kirino and may have thought that she hated him when that wasn’t the case.

When I read vol 2 for the first time one year ago I didn’t give any importance to Kirino actually saying that he hadn’t behaved like a “brother” before, but in the light of events in vol 6 I think it’s really important, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Kyousuke had been the one who had been cold towards her, or at least who wasn’t able to understand one fact: Kirino is a tsundere!

  2. Same here, same here…

  3. Muy buenos tus aportes che, espero que sigas subiendo mas aun, saludos.

  4. Another excellent post^^

  5. another great summary.

it might be that it’s both parties fault or someone starts it. In volume one kyousuke had a dream or a nostalgic feeling. It looks like that they are extremely close back then but just turn cold or maybe because they both grown up.. who knows. Though I think if kirino is a tsundere and kyousuke isn’t an otaku yet. Maybe he didn’t understand what kirino is thinking back then. Maybe because kirino is being all tsun tsun on him. It’s starting to go cold and as time goes. It turn like this.

Girl can be pretty hard to read. Or rather I can’t understand them at all :D

    • In fact, I mentioned that there was a passage that can be easily overlooked but that caught my attention: when Kirino’s friends start badmouthing Kyousuke, Kirino suddenly becomes silent—if she really hated Kyousuke that much, she would have insulted him as well

  6. Did she really say something like this “after all this time are you trying to behave like a REAL brother now?”
If so, does that mean their not blood related because normally people will only say “like a brother” if they are blood related.

    • Well, I think she meant behave like a real brother, implying that before that he had been too distant. I remember it having the kanji for face, 面, which means “face” but in this context also “appearance, behavior like…”

  7. Haha, poor Kyousuke is just too nice. Doing all that for his sister, and he ends up suffering for it.

  8. Thanks a lot for your detailed work and sharing it !!

I read the manga first volume and watched the anime too recently,I prefer the manga and thanks to you know more about the story ;)

    Great blog :p

  9. ermmm. :D what else can i say except for this summary you made is great! great work as usual. thank you! but then why need to P.S there?? behind the message

  10. Thanks for the summary!

Sad to see the last scene cut out from anime

    • And I’m a little ashamed I forgot about it xD

      • I think leaving out the end of vol. 2 in episode 5 of the anime is interesting. The ending of vol. 2 sheds a little more light on the relationship between Kirino and Kyousuke, while the end of episode 5 leaves the viewer to deduce the current state of the relationship.

I also find it interesting that the anime is not told from the viewpoint of Kyousuke. We hear less of his inner thoughts.

Anywho…thank you so much for these summaries.

Also, the novels have yet to shine any light on why the siblings relationship was the way it was before the incident in vol. 1, right?

  11. ““Don’t you understand? After that, I was thinking and… if I’m honest, I… think I love you, brother”

    “Eeeh, are you serious?”

    Kirino bursts out laughing.”

Now that I think about it, she could also have been referring to this at the end of tome 7, don’t you think?
It would still be plausible that tundere Kirino wanted to test Kyousuke’s reaction after everything he said, about loving his sister. Even though we know it was part of his plan. And she could have faked a good laugh after seeing his face?

Funnily enough, he never denied what he said this time in front of her and Ayase. Awkward. XD
