Winter 2012 Impressions

With the 2012 Winter season in its last month, I’d like to briefly comment on each of the animes I’m watching –and enjoying! I don’t think I’ve been disappointed by any anime I started this season, which is a good sign. Notice this is not a ranking, I’m not too comfortable with rankings and very often the latest episode so watched or what moved you the most will just affect the ranking, so it’s better to just comment on my overall impressions.

All in all, it’s a reasonably good season. I’m watching a lot of series, there are many comedies –which I really like-, some romance too, ecchi too, and the only genre I might miss is some classic romantic comedy.

Kill Me Baby and other underrated comedies

Earlier I was having a conversation on Twitter about Kill Me Baby and the remarkable voice acting. I especially like Yasuna and Agiri’s voices (just try listening to Agiri’s Character CD, not because of the music, but the tone of her voice). I really hope their seiyuus, Akasaki Chinatsu and Takabe Ai respectively, get more roles!

So this conversation reminded me of other shows like Nekogami Yaoyorozu and Kanamemo. What do these three anime have in common, apart from being comedies? That I truly believe they have been unfairly underrated. Now, of course some people don’t like comedy too much, others like one type of comedy and not another, but still with some exceptions (such as Nichijou, and let’s not deceive ourselves. Nichijou is remarkably good, but if Kyoani hadn’t be behind it, it might have shared the same fate as other comedies) most comedy or slice-of-life comedy animes are ignored at large. I mean, Kill Me Baby, Kanamemo or Nekogami are really good, better than the attention they have received might indicate. To the point of being masterpieces? Maybe not? However as far as I’m concerned words such as “masterpiece” or “work of art” are just little annoying pompous words and what matters the most is, or should be, the entertainment value, how it makes you feel.

High School DxD – 09

Nice episode. When I say High School DxD is my kind of thing, this is what I mean. Interesting but not annoying/pretentious plot, a succession of more serious episodes and light-hearted episodes, interesting (and totally hot) girls and romance.

So Koneko-chan (hell, I love these “I hate shameless people” girls!) pretty much made Issei understand where his true inner strength is: his perviness. Focus, imagine pervy things, and your powers will grow (apart from other things)! Coupled with his resolve not to be the underdog and protect everyone after pretty much confessing to Rias-sempai, and we are set for the finale.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 08

The good about this episode is that their situation finally got solved, when it turns out that the annoying landlady was just a bitter single in her 30s. Well, it’s hard to like her, and to approve of her actions. Then again, it’s not like I don’t know what it feels to be almost 30 (I’m 26) and single, but well, let’s leave it at that! Also, she wants Hina, which makes it the nth character in this show who is a lolicon. But the lolicon I approve of the most is Raika-san. She’s like too awesome! I mean, that deadpan face of hers when pointing out the embarrassing things others do or say (especially Yuuta), yet that really caring and sweet attitude. I’m sorry Sora, but I buy Yuuta’s fantasy of Raika being the mother and you the daughters.

Lemon-sempai knows everything

And that’s why she’s so awesome! Her “fufufu” are becoming almost erotic!

So well, no matter the different possible pairings (if you are curious, you could have -and many of the would be hilarious or hot depending on your fetishes- $latex {6 \choose 2} = 15$ prospective pairings), there’s nothing we can do so we have a fully happy end, since one person is going to be left alone… or not? Lemon-sempai has forgotten something: she is also in the game! If the likely case happens, Lemon-sempai can end up with either Kanna, Mio, or Ichika!

High School DxD – 08

Well, here it is. I had more or less figured out that an arranged marriage would lead to this type of plot development. To be honest, it’s not the development I’d prefer. Although this will surely bring Issei and Rias a lot closer –I’m sure they will win the Rating Game, and Issei will be the one to kick ass- I’m not all that comfortable when I have to hate someone in anime. But for good or evil this is what this otherwise really good series – I’m going to give the novels a try too! – has in store for us, so let’s look forward to that moment when Issei and Rias and everyone else will kick, extinguish, kill or whatever that Raizer guy. Apart from reeking of netorare, that guy is an asshole.

Steins;Gate OVA

I always love this type of extra episodes that help wrap up a story that, as usual in the limited format of even 24 episodes, abruptly ends, and here we have mad scientist Hououin Kyouma travelling to America with some of his lab members to invade and chaos and… I mean to cheer for Feyris nyan nyan in that card or whatever competition and promoting the darkest –and sweetest- side of Japan’s culture but, more importantly, to meet a certain tsundere assistant.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 07

Jokes (?) aside, this is precisely what I was looking forward to since the very beginning: Sora meeting Raika-san, Sora getting totally jealous, Sora worrying she’s no match for Raika’s nikus and skills (although somehow Sora seems oblivious to the fact that Raika is a weirdo, although being a wierdo is actually an important charming point). Even better, Raika is a minicon of sorts too and totally likes Sora, while Miu, being the precocious girl she is, enjoys watching the “battlefield”, perfectly aware of what’s going on. Meanwhile, Raika seems to be falling in love -in her own way- with Yuuta, while oitan is not only too busy with part time jobs, now they are being evicted by a certain bitch of a landlady who seems to hate lolis, apart from being a stalker, no matter how much of a landlady she is.

Anime Spring 2012 Season Preview

It is that time of the year again when the current season is half way and the Spring season looms on the horizon, and as usual those ubiquitous yet useful charts (especially for people like me who don’t visit anime news sites… hell I don’t even know of any good site, since ANN is just an anti-anime website for bored first-year college students who haven’t gotten over it yet).

First of all I’m going to comment on those animes I have a special interest in, either because I’m familiar with the source material or I was looking forward to it for some reason or another.

High School DxD – 07

Well things slowed down a little for this episode, especially since all concerning Rias’ fiance has been postponed until next episode, with a delicious and very self-explanatory (in regard to what she thinks about arranged marriages) “Please take my virginity” to Issei. Given that arranged marriage is totally old-fashioned anyway, what better way of nullifying it than having your pawn take your virginity? Win!
