New Year’s Anime Countdown – #2 Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Well, number 2 is Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (many people had already guessed this would be in the top 3, unsurprisingly given how much I like the series). I have already written extensively about the series, so all I have to say is that the anime is really faithful to the novels and does a great job at portraying all the characters and situations in exactly the same way I had imagined them. Now, when I read the novels, I can even “hear” the seiyuu’s voices in my mind and picture them with the same style as the anime, which was the style already shown in Denpa Onna which I quite like.

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #3 Infinite Stratos

Well, we’re finally in my top 3, and number 3 goes to Infinite Stratos, which aired back in the winter of 2011. I think that Infinite Stratos’ greatest virtue is not doing something different but rather doing remarkably well everything a harem show is supposed to have. The plot itself is interesting, leads to certain developments while not distracting the viewer from the most important element in a pure harem show: the girls that surround the main character.

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #4 Gosick

One of my favorite animes of the year, although I watched a little late, is Gosick. I could say I’ve never been a fan of mystery literature, but I guess it’s more accurate to say that I’ve never even tried it, but Gosick was really interesting and fun to watch.

Of course, I’m not forgetting about one of the big awesome aspects of Gosick: the astonishing and overwhelming cuteness of my imouto Victorica. Her many cute faces, slightly tsundere-ish personality, her blushing, her gothic Lolita outfits and the great, and I mean great, voice acting done by her seiyuu Yuuki Aoi.

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #6 Dog Days

I’d be blatantly lying if I said I don’t love nekomimi moe. However, Dog Days introduced – or reintroduced, we remember awesome animes like Inukami (wan wan!!)—inumimi (dog ears) moe (and we also had foxy ears, remember the voluptuous samurai …

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #7 The World God Only Knows

My number 7 goes to The World God Only Knows (Kami Nomi Zo Shiru Sekai), and not only the anime series (the second season aired this year) but also to the manga.

TWGOK could be easily described as a parody of hardcore otakuism, but it isn’t, if by parody we mean something “external”, a so-called “deconstruction” that would attempt to show the artificiality or nonsense of being an otaku like good old Keima. No, TWGOK is much better and complex than this. It is a self-parody. It is not written attempting to alienate otakus from their hobby, as certain elitists would love to do, but as a way that allows us otakus to smile warmly at Keima’s antics, where we see ourselves reflected, before giving out a good laugh.

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #8 Working’!!

I’m going to make a very light review of my #7 anime, Working, since well, it’s Christmas Eve. Some may argue that after one whole season, Working may have become a little repetitive. I admit some jokes keep repeating themselves, …

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #9 The IDOLM@STER

Although the Idolm@ster has a long history (it’s easy to see just the amount of fanart existing before it aired), I admit I had only vaguely Heard of it before the anime started airing. And at first I was a little confused about what it was going to be about (not knowing it would span two seasons, I thought it was going nowhere once episode 12 approached), but in the end it turned out to be a highly enjoyable anime, and it introduced me into the world of im@s (currently addicted to the PSP games!).

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai – 12 (END)

And thus comes the best series of the season to an end. It is, as could be expected, an open end, and it’s a pity the series was only allotted 12 episodes because it is precisely when Kodaka realizes that his best friend Sora was Yozora, that the series starts moving forward. And I don’t know what’s the rationale behind this, probably something like business, but I can’t really understand why AIC hasn’t chosen to give BokuTomo 24 episodes, just like I can’t understand why AIC didn’t give Oreimo 24 episodes, that is, two seasons. Because both have been long-anticipated hits, so it making it a 24-episode adaptation doesn’t sound as risky as doing that for other series.
