Haiyoru! Nyaruko-san: My Nyarlathotep can’t be this cute

Wow! Being a fan of Asumi Kana, my hopes were up the moment I realized she was voicing the main character, moe Cthulhu mythos otaku god Nyarlathotep, Nyaruko to friends. Seeing her genki, hyperactive personality, I kept liking this show more and more, until I was in love with it by the end. I mean, it’s a hilarious, random, totally crazy romantic comedy. You never know what unexpected thing Nyaruko is going to say or do, or what it’s going to parody next (including Pokemon xD). And I mean, here we have an alien/Cthulhu god who is a complete otaku! (Apparently, otaku culture is highly appreciated by aliens. All Hail the Aliens!)

Kill Me Baby and other underrated comedies

Earlier I was having a conversation on Twitter about Kill Me Baby and the remarkable voice acting. I especially like Yasuna and Agiri’s voices (just try listening to Agiri’s Character CD, not because of the music, but the tone of her voice). I really hope their seiyuus, Akasaki Chinatsu and Takabe Ai respectively, get more roles!

So this conversation reminded me of other shows like Nekogami Yaoyorozu and Kanamemo. What do these three anime have in common, apart from being comedies? That I truly believe they have been unfairly underrated. Now, of course some people don’t like comedy too much, others like one type of comedy and not another, but still with some exceptions (such as Nichijou, and let’s not deceive ourselves. Nichijou is remarkably good, but if Kyoani hadn’t be behind it, it might have shared the same fate as other comedies) most comedy or slice-of-life comedy animes are ignored at large. I mean, Kill Me Baby, Kanamemo or Nekogami are really good, better than the attention they have received might indicate. To the point of being masterpieces? Maybe not? However as far as I’m concerned words such as “masterpiece” or “work of art” are just little annoying pompous words and what matters the most is, or should be, the entertainment value, how it makes you feel.

Kill Me Baby!

If you haven’t watched it yet, and you feel like watching a light-hearted comedy, I’m totally recommending Kill Me Baby. There’s not much to explain, really. It’s like… there’s this slightly airhead of a girl called Yasuna whose friend and classmate, Sonya, happens to be a professional assassin, there’s this ninja girl who is also in the same organization… nah, It sounds crazy, and it is, and there’s no really more meaning to their profession (?) than that.

New Year’s Anime Countdown – #7 The World God Only Knows

My number 7 goes to The World God Only Knows (Kami Nomi Zo Shiru Sekai), and not only the anime series (the second season aired this year) but also to the manga.

TWGOK could be easily described as a parody of hardcore otakuism, but it isn’t, if by parody we mean something “external”, a so-called “deconstruction” that would attempt to show the artificiality or nonsense of being an otaku like good old Keima. No, TWGOK is much better and complex than this. It is a self-parody. It is not written attempting to alienate otakus from their hobby, as certain elitists would love to do, but as a way that allows us otakus to smile warmly at Keima’s antics, where we see ourselves reflected, before giving out a good laugh.

Ben-to – 10

Now this is what I love about ben-to: cool fights over… yeah, over bentos! And the Kyo twincestuous sisters actually managed to beat Sen, that’s quite something, but I also think she was somewhat… unprepared. She actually suggested fighting at that supermarket (supermarkets in Japan are so awesome! I wish I could visit it!), where opponents are usually weak, so her Satou can have some sort of rehab after his injuries trying to save his Sega console, but instead they found the toughest opponents to date. Usually you’d feel upset if the main heroine got beaten up like this, but I didn’t really feel anything other than that I’m looking forward to Sen recovering and taking revenge.

Ben-to – 09

Just to get the negative stuff off my chest, I think this episode, just last like episode, lacked Sen. Honestly, the Ice Witch and the wolf battles are what give Ben-to that distinctive flair, between parody and just kick-ass action, and I’m really missing it.

But of course, I cannot complain after all. Asebi was just hyper-moe (I’d eat her bento any time!), the twincest sisters were back and, more importantly, the long, detailed yuri scene between Oshiroi and Ume was… fantastic. The type of episode where a few screencaps that are hot, but don’t do justice to the sexiness of the scene, are enough to portray both what the episode was like and what I loved about it.

Anime Review – Nekogami Yaoyorozu

Earlier I was listening to the Nekogami Yaoyorozu ED, by Tomatsu Haruka, and realized just how underrated this slice-of-life series that aired last Summer is. Of course I’m aware that a bit of fanboyism is involved in stating that a series is underrated, but I do feel that it deserved a little more attention. It reminds me of another extremely good slice-of-life comedy that aired back in 2009 and yet it pretty much was ignored by most people, Kanamemo.

Review – Yuru Yuri

Yuru Yuri was my favorite anime of the 2011 Summer season and once I make my ranking of favorite animes of the year, I can already announce that it’s going to be part of the top 3 animes, because Yuru Yuri pretty much embodies every single anime genre/style that I love and live for – with the honorable exception of harem.

Yuru Yuri has an almost hyperactive upbeat style, represented very well by the OP. The OP is addictive and very cheerful, I really like the combination of all different voices, and the lyrics are sometimes random and crazy, just the way I like it (I’m a sucker for songs like that, somewhat nonsensical, cheerful tunes).

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai — Volume 2 (Part 1)

One day, Kodaka finds a girl wearing a bald head wig.

“Sorry, wrong class”

“Wait!!!” says the girl who is none other than Sena. “Is that all you have to say?”

“Oh, sorry. Erm… it looks good on you”

“That’s not it!! You are supposed to laugh!”

This is Yozora’s latest idea to make friends: comedy. She read on the net that even if you are bad at studying or sports, and not very pretty, you can still be popular if you are funny. Yozora is also in the room and she’s wearing a blonde wig. She is going to show them what good comedy is. She paints the kanji for “meat” on her forehead.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai — Volume 1 (Part 5)

But maybe the whole play thingy wasn’t such a bad idea, at least that’s what Yozora thinks and the following day she has decided that the problem was adapting a work. This time, she will create her own play, which she claims will be highly entertaining. And since I think that we already know what Yozora is like, I think it’s guaranteed that it will be highly amusing, but for different reasons.
