New Year’s Anime Countdown – #1 K-ON!!

I’m surprised almost nobody was able to guess what my number one would be, above all once all the big hits (Oreimo, Yosuga no Sora, etc.,) had already appeared. Yes, my favorite anime of the year was none other than the longer, more awesome second season of Kyoani’s K-ON.

So what makes K-ON so great? I could speak about the characters. All of them are truly great people. They are kind, warm, dependable. In fact, the chemistry among Mio, Yui, Ritsu, Mugi and Azusa, but we can’t forget Ui, Jun, Nodoka or Sawako-sensei as well, was outstanding. It was such a pleasure to see their interactions, always full of friendship, lacking any malice. And since we got a 24-episode season, even Azusa and Mugi, for example, got to spend some time together, learning about their differences and about what they have in common, learning about each other, deepening their bonds.

Being a “Kirino” in your country

In the few first episodes, Oreimo deals a lot with being an otaku and the social problems that it may result in. I admit that half of what I’m going to say in the following post is highly speculative, so I want many comments and I don’t mind being corrected at all.

First of all, I’m not going to talk about “anime” in general but about a particular type of anime. I don’t mean to be exclusive but I mean otaku anime (I know the word is imprecise, give me a break on that one) , the type of seasonal anime like what I blog here. That is, anime and manga has become increasingly popular outside Japan, but it’s usually, and I don’t mean it in a negative way, shounen, shoujo or more “classic” anime. What I want to talk about today is not if you can find someone on the train reading Naruto, Bleach or Nana, but if, where you live, it is possible to find someone, who, for example, has heard of Oreimo, K-ON, or Toradora.

K-ON!! – 26 (END 2) and thoughts about the movie

Although everyone thinks there’s nothing wrong, our Yui is obsessed with her looks in the graduation picture and she decides to visit Sawa-chan, who caught a cold, to pressure her to allow her to change it. To their chagrin and to the relief of many people, Sawa-chan doesn’t seem to have a boyfriend, and when her female friends visit her, they ask the girls if the club will be alright after they graduate. Difficult answer, but there’s a glimpse of hope when they catch Azusa practicing together with Jun and Ui… potential future members?

My “positive anime” ranking

A ranking of anime that I consider to be particularly positive. Lack of conflict or violence, very little drama, a positive outlook on life, idealized gentle worlds, friendship and peace are the watchwords here.

K-ON!! – 25

Three years ago, a DVD containing a video was sealed in a cookie box, a fearsome video that was never to be seen. However our hapless Azusa was never told about the sealed box and opens it… Yes, that DVD contains nurse Mio, in a video they made to try to get new members for the club. Three years later, and just before our girls graduate, they decide to shoot a new video. After many bizarre and hilarious ideas, Azusa decides to show the world what makes the club so good: upbeat atmosphere, and working hard when they have to.

K-ON!! 24 – END

The graduation day is here. Three years have elapsed since we met Ritsu, Mio, Tsumugi and Yui. A lot has happened — buying instruments, performing at school festivals, welcoming their cute kouhai Nakano Azusa, practicing during the summer, going to the music festival, visiting Kyoto, spending Christmas together, getting lots of fans, Valentine’s Day, Ton-chan… but, above all, three years spent with the best friends one could ever have, always in a good mood, with a cup of tea and cakes.

K-ON!! – 23

The day before the graduation ceremony, our girls have little to do at school, although they start to realize that this is actually the last day. Things they wanted to do, things they want to remember, and playing music… this is their last chance to do it, especially to do it with their cute kouhai Azusa.
