Winter 2012 Highlights

Well the winter season is almost over, with one episode left for most shows, so I wanna share a few thoughts about it. All in all it’s been a decent one. I’ve followed 11 shows, which must be a little above my average, and although I did really like many of the shows, I feel I’ve seen stronger seasons. Apart from the ecchi anime draught in recent seasons, perhaps what I have missed the most is pure romantic comedy shows (such as Mayo Chiki, Hidan No Aria or MM, to mention a few), but we had a very decent romance anime instead, Ano Natsu, and these are also hard to come by. Also many comedies, which is always welcome, such as Kill Me Baby, Danshi Koukousei and Milky Holmes.

So let’s see my top 3, the revelations (the animes that I had overlooked or which turned out to be better than I expected) and, unfortunately, also the flops (not necessarily animes I didn’t like, but rather from which I expected more, or something different).

Winter 2012 Impressions

With the 2012 Winter season in its last month, I’d like to briefly comment on each of the animes I’m watching –and enjoying! I don’t think I’ve been disappointed by any anime I started this season, which is a good sign. Notice this is not a ranking, I’m not too comfortable with rankings and very often the latest episode so watched or what moved you the most will just affect the ranking, so it’s better to just comment on my overall impressions.

All in all, it’s a reasonably good season. I’m watching a lot of series, there are many comedies –which I really like-, some romance too, ecchi too, and the only genre I might miss is some classic romantic comedy.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 08

The good about this episode is that their situation finally got solved, when it turns out that the annoying landlady was just a bitter single in her 30s. Well, it’s hard to like her, and to approve of her actions. Then again, it’s not like I don’t know what it feels to be almost 30 (I’m 26) and single, but well, let’s leave it at that! Also, she wants Hina, which makes it the nth character in this show who is a lolicon. But the lolicon I approve of the most is Raika-san. She’s like too awesome! I mean, that deadpan face of hers when pointing out the embarrassing things others do or say (especially Yuuta), yet that really caring and sweet attitude. I’m sorry Sora, but I buy Yuuta’s fantasy of Raika being the mother and you the daughters.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 07

Jokes (?) aside, this is precisely what I was looking forward to since the very beginning: Sora meeting Raika-san, Sora getting totally jealous, Sora worrying she’s no match for Raika’s nikus and skills (although somehow Sora seems oblivious to the fact that Raika is a weirdo, although being a wierdo is actually an important charming point). Even better, Raika is a minicon of sorts too and totally likes Sora, while Miu, being the precocious girl she is, enjoys watching the “battlefield”, perfectly aware of what’s going on. Meanwhile, Raika seems to be falling in love -in her own way- with Yuuta, while oitan is not only too busy with part time jobs, now they are being evicted by a certain bitch of a landlady who seems to hate lolis, apart from being a stalker, no matter how much of a landlady she is.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 06

Papa Kiki is starting to grow on me, now that it’s clear that it’s not going to be something too emo or anything, and this episode in particular was heartwarming enough, with the girls going back to their parents’ house to retrieve some valuable items they had left behind, which of course was bound to bring back certain bittersweet memories, with the image of the house empty, dark and without electricity being powerful enough.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 03

I’ll be honest here, this episode was only mildly entertaining to me. Any regular reader will know that drama is not my cup of tea, but I also understand that the premise of the show needs this type of episode. It would have been most unnatural if suddenly they were all a happy “family” living in Yuuta’s cramped apartment as if nothing had happened.

Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai – 02

Since we could all know what was going to happen in this episode just by reading any synopsis of the show, I was expecting not to like this episode given my strong dislike of drama, and how much certain shows like devoting time to drama even if they are comedies just because some people perceive that to be “deep” (whatever that means) but this necessary plot element only took up around 4 minutes and didn’t show the moments that could have been more dramatic (like the girls learning of their parents’ death) so it turned out all fine, and now we’re set for the good stuff.

First impressions: Papa Kiki, Ano Natsu, Rinne no Lagrange, Moretsu Pirates and ZnT

Although from what I had heard it looked promising, I feared one thing about Papa no Iu Koto Wo Kikinasai (Papa Kiki): if it was a father-daughters relationship, I’m not really into that kind of incest so it would, in the end, leave no room for proper romantic comedy. But it turns out that the “papa” from their title is actually their young uncle, who is like an oniichan to them, so everything is fine. In fact, the oldest sister Sora has feelings for Yuuta, and the first episode even included some healthy fanservice so even my misgivings about it being about a university student (I prefer high school settings, can’t stomach university stuff) can be dismissed. It looks like it’s going to be a really entertaining romantic comedy, with cute girls and lolis, so what else could you ask for? I’m sure that a rivalry is bound to arise between Haruka and kyonyuu weirdo Raika!!
